Walking through the estate Duin and Kruidberg and Middle Herenduin (black route)

The landscape changes from farmland to forest and dune area. Duin and Kruidberg has a history of splitting and merging. The double names are merges of the old homesteads Duin and Berg and De Kruidberg. The name Herenduinen is descended from the owners of the Heren van Brederode. The dunes are about 800 years old.

Difficulty: Intermediate walk

Length: 8 kilometers

Duration: 2 hours

Marking: Follow black arrows

Starting point: Parking Duin- and Kruidbergerweg next to Landgoed Duin and Kruidberg. (Entrance opposite Hoeve Eigenwijs, Duin- and Kruidbergerweg between house number 72 and 74 turn right into the narrow road. Parking Herenduin: Entrance is located at the Duin- en Kruidbergerweg in Driehuis, south of the Westerveld Cemetery, opposite ‘Lijn 5’ entering the road .

Access: By train to station Santpoort-Noord. There you walk through the tunnel under the railway to the other platform (arrival from the direction Uitgeest). You walk across the platform and take the footpath to the right. Then turn left to the Kennemergaardweg and then turn left to the parking lot.

Directions:
At the parking lot we turn right along the information sign. We follow the black arrows. Soon we climb up and descend the Koepelberg. We now walk past the Landgoed Duin and Kruidberg to the entrance of the Midden Herenduin. We are now in the Big Forest. After some time we will end up on the bike path. We follow this a little bit and than we take the Verbindingspad. We still follow the black arrows and then return to a cycle path that leads to the sea. We turn left here and now walk back to the parking lot together with the blue arrows.

On the way we can encounter deer and roe deer. Pony’s and Scottish Highlanders also run in the grazing area. These animals provide for changes in the dune area due to their grazing. With their hooves they release the sand and sometimes make the start of a sand drift. Some plants benefit from this. Several plants grow here for instance the water mint, parnasia, slender gentian and orchids.

Worth seeing
We walk through a grazing area of Koniks horses and Scottish Highlanders. They are used to open the soil and eat the vegetation. This creates an open dune landscape. The mosses, herbs and flowers get another chance to grow. The animals are not dangerous. However, it is advised to keep a distance and not to feed the animals.

At the “Grote Vlak” you see many bushes and few trees. The grassland is unique in Europe. Because the soil is nutrient-poor, there are many rare species of plants such as, smooth and real walstro, dune violets, broom, lunar, eyebright and reed orchids. You can also see rare insects such as dragonflies, glass cutters, brown winter damselflies, dune pearl fowl and orange tips.

Walking through the Landgoed Duin and Kruidberg

Difficulty: Easy walk

Length: 3.1 kilometers

Duration: 1 hour

Marking: Follow green arrows

Directions:
At the parking lot we turn right along the information sign. We follow the green arrows. Soon we climb up the Koepelberg. After some time we can turn left to a viewpoint. After this we continue our path and turn left onto the Stroperspad. After some time we arrive at the bike path. Here we can follow the green arrows to the left, but we make now a little detour [alternative route]. We turn right and take the first path, the Brederodepad, on the left. At the end of this path we turn left and follow the blue arrows to the parking lot.

In the forest area, hardwood predominates. Corsican and Austrian pines have been planted by the former owner and form a minority. Formerly this forest area served for hunting. There are deer and roe deer.

Walk through the Caprera Estate

Walk through Caprera estate

Estate Caprera lies on the edge of the inner dune on the “Kopje van Bloemendaal”. This is the highest dune summit in Zuid-Kennemerland. The walking park has different types of forest, a swampy section and beautiful views. On the estate there is an open-air theater where summer performances are given.

Difficulty: Easy walk

Length: 3 kilometers

Duration: 0.45 hours

Marking: none

Starting point: Hoge Duin and Daalseweg 2 in Bloemendaal. (At the cup of Bloemendaal
from May to September. and weekends from 11 am to 4 pm).

Access: by car or bicycle

Admission: 1 euro

Catering: none

Directions:
At the entrance we immediately go right past the house. You follow it straight ahead and you always keep to the right. We now walk past the sports fields. You go right along the path and you pass through the marshy part and a lake. Then we pass a playing field. Then we go up the stairs and take the second path on the left. We come to another staircase and go up. We turn left and arrive at an asphalt path at some point. We now turn right and at the end of this path there are two viewpoints. We keep to the right as much as possible and then we automatically reach the open-air theater. To the right of this we can make a short detour and then walk back to the entrance.

About Caprera
Due to the special location of the forest park on the slopes of the inner dune edge Caprera has a remarkable and very varied flora and fauna. There are 181 plant species found.

In the highest part of the park one sees mainly pine forest. Here one comes across strubs with cardinal’s cap, sea buckthorn and dog rose. In the lower part of the park you can see the oak fern, male fern, bunt grass, smooth walstroo, creeping herbaceous, pimpernel, duinsalomonszegel, snake and the pipe flower elsewhere. In addition, cultivated plants have been planted in the past, such as Taxus, Mahogany, Hydrangea, Juniper and Boxwood. There are many bats because there are many shelters and water available. The nightingale is also brooding there.

Walk through woods and dunes to the beach and the sea and back

In the past there were estates of wealthy business people from Amsterdam. There you can still find remnants of it, such as an ice cellar and romantic tree avenues. Again and again we are surprised by beautiful views. The vegetation of forest is slowly changing into a dune landscape. The inner dune changes to middle dunes and outdoor dunes. The Zeereep is still in its original state here.

Difficulty: Medium-heavy walk

Length: 11 kilometers

Duration: 2.5 hours

Marking: First follow blue arrows to the sea. Back via the directions.

Directions:
From the parking lot we follow the blue arrows next to the bike path. We follow the Brederodepad and then the Jachtweg. Then we walk a bit over the cycle path to finally take a hiking trail to the sea. From the sea we turn left on a gravel road and walk through the Hubertusvallei. We keep on keeping left and arrive at a birdwatching hut. We continue our way and still keeping left until we reach the bike path. There we go right and arrive at a water tap. We turn left here and then automatically return to the parking lot.

Along the way we walk through various forests, such as a beech forest, a coniferous forest, a thicket (a thicket is a vegetation of bushes from 1 to 5 meters high). We see lichen steppe and finally, after the helmet, an empty beach with a tuft of weeds. We see different birds such as the gull and the woodpecker and at the birdwatching hut several water birds. Sometimes we can meet the natterjack toad and see the parnassia bloom.

Birds
All seasons are particularly beautiful birds here. The dune lake, where you pass, has been excavated to extract sand and now contains rainwater. Throughout the year you will see water birds, including the herring gull, grebe, gadwall, tufted duck and many others.

Shelduck, Doddaar and Slotted Grebe
In the spring you will find the shed and the Doddaar. Sometimes the Bearded Grebe also chooses this area to nest.

Karrekiet & Nachtingale
In the summer comes the Karrekiet, which besides her own young also breeds the eggs of the Cuckoo. The Koekkoek will therefore also hear well in the summer, next to the song of the Nightingale.
