Walking among the deer

Varied walk along the beach, dunes and old streets

This walk takes you past everything Zandvoort has to offer: beach, dunes and old Zandvoort streets. You will encounter many fallow deer in the Amsterdam Water Supply. The Noordoosterkanaal offers beautiful views over the dunes.

Difficulty: easy walk on good paths

Directions:
We start at Zandvoort station. Here we follow the orange arrows to the boulevard. We turn left on the boulevard. If necessary, you can walk along the beach to the rescue station of the Zandvoort Rescue Company. Just before the rescue post on the boulevard, turn left onto a small pedestrian path. Then turn right and immediately left again through the entrance to the AD dunes. (located in the parking lot). Here you can purchase an entrance ticket digitally for €1.50 per person. We follow the walking path until we reach the Noordoosterkanaal. There we turn left. We then arrive at a pine forest and turn left here. Via the entrance we arrive at Zandvoortselaan. From here we follow the gray arrows until we reach the green arrows. At Van Ostadestraat we can follow the green or red arrows back to the station.

The Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen

In this area of the dunes around Zandvoort, the water is pre-purified for the capital of our country, Amsterdam. There are canals and wells everywhere here. You will find special flora and fauna around here.

History

While there was too little water in Amsterdam and the water in the canals and ditches was polluted and not clean, the dunes had too much water. Ultimately it was Jacob van Lennep and English engineers who built the canals in the dunes. It turned out to be a great success. So large in fact that the groundwater dropped considerably and the dunes dried up.

Infiltration

Due to the drought and the demand for clean water, a new way had to be found. The dunes are now artificially supplied with water from the Rhine river. The filtered Rhine water thus penetrates the dried-out dune valleys.

Landgoed Leyduin, Woestduin en Vinkenduin

The walk goes through a beautiful estate with traces of an old horse race track. You will pass a white stone watchtower in neo-Gothic style. There was a finch track on the Vinkenduin estate. The track can still be recognized by high earthen walls that surround a field with lime trees. Finches used to be caught in nets here.

Direction:

From the parking lot we follow the red arrows. We walk past Huis Leyduin. On the other side we see a stork nest, where storks often breed. We are now passing Gasterij Leyduin. We continue our journey and cross a lake on stones. Then we see the remains of a launch site of V1 bombs, which were fired at London. We continue to follow the red arrows. We are now passing through the Vinkenduin estate. At Woestduin the landscape becomes more open. Via the red arrows we return to the parking lot. In the bulb season we can enjoy the view over the bulb fields

House Leyduin

The first country estate you pass is the stately Huize Leyduin, dating from 1921. Less old than you might think at first glance. This is the third country house on (not exactly) this spot, there were once two other country houses.

The Belvedere

This neo-Gothic style white stone watchtower from about 1760 stands on a hill above the stream. The tower is a ‘folly’, a structure that was put there purely for decoration. The Belvedere was restored in 2013.

Vinkenbaan and Renbaan Woestduin

Finches used to be caught with nets in the autumn on the finches track. The crispy fried birds were a delicacy, but were banned in 1912. A large lawn reminds us of the race track Woestduin. Horse races used to be held here, complete with grandstand, betting office and hotel.

A walk through the Brouwerskolk Park

The walk through the Brouwerskolkpark is a short varied walk. We ascend to the cup of Overveen. Then we come to the Brouwerskolk, where pure water was obtained in the seventeenth century for brewing Haarlem beer. The water went to the city via the Brouwersvaart. We also pass the Jewish Cemetery, a national monument.

Directions:

We follow the purple arrows from the parking lot on the Brouwerskolkweg. We soon reach the cup of Overveen. Then we descend to the Brouwerskolk. Then we cross the bridge and via the Korte Zijlweg we arrive in the center of Overveen. We reach the station, where we can also start the walk and go up again via the Tetterodeweg. On the right hand side we find the Jewish cemetery. Soon we reach the parking lot again.

Brouwerskolkpark

In the seventeenth century, pure water was taken from the Brouwerskolk for brewing Haarlem beer. But linen bleachers also settled on the edge of the dunes. A great battle arose between the brewers, who needed pure water, and the bleachers, who caused a lot of pollution. The battle was won by the brewers and the bleachers had to disappear.

Toad migration

Toad screens have been installed along the Brouwerskolkweg. After their hibernation, amphibians, such as frogs, toads and salamanders can use their reproductive water without risk from the Middenduin to the Brouwerskolk via three tunnels. Small mammals such as mice and stoats also use the tunnels. The toad migration usually takes place between February and April. The combination of temperature (minimum 6°C) and humidity (the wetter the better) are important for getting the toad migration going.

Jewish cemetery

The Jewish cemetery is a national monument. It was founded in 1797 by the Neie Kille (‘New Municipality’), a Jewish community that had separated from the Amsterdam High German Jewish Community under the name Adath Jeschurun (municipality of Jeshurun). Lodewijk Napoleon found all those different denominations, Jewish and otherwise, confusing and under his kingship the Neie Kille returned in 1808 to the Amsterdam Hoogduitse Gemeente. During the Second World War, the cemetery was threatened with closure and the sale of the land. Thanks to attentive officials who discovered that a cemetery may not be built on until thirty years after its closure, this did not happen.

Manpadsroute

The Manpads route (blue) connects the Leyduin estate with the Groenendaal estate. You will first pass Huis Leyduin. Then you pass a historic drinking water pumping station. You will then pass two beautiful country estates: Ipenrode and the Huis aan het Manpad.

Directions:

From the parking lot we follow the blue arrows. We first walk past the Landgoed Leyduin. Then we pass Gasterij Leyduin and turn right. We cross an unguarded level crossing (watch carefully). Then we walk along the Leidsevaart and head towards Groenendaal. We now walk past the Ipenrode estate. We cross the Herenweg and then arrive in the Groenendaal estate. Then we turn right and pass Landgoed Het Huis te Manpad. We cross the Leidsevaart again and go to the parking lot.

Estate Leyduin

Landgoed Leyduin is located on one of the old beach walls behind the dunes. They were already inhabited in the early Bronze Age (around 2000 BC). In the early Middle Ages, this was a forest area that stretched from Leiden to Alkmaar. The counts of Holland held their hunting parties here. From the 17th century, wealthy merchants bought land there as an investment in sand extraction for the urban development of Amsterdam. Later they built summer residences there. These homesteads changed over the centuries into increasingly beautiful country houses, including Leyduin. Landscape Noord-Holland now manages the estate. You will find some centuries-old trees, a belvedere and a stream. The first drinking water extracted in the dunes for Amsterdam once flowed here to the pumping station (now a museum) on the Leidsevaart. House on the Manpad The Huis te Manpad is a historic country estate on the Herenweg. Peter Cornelisz. In 1630, Heuts commissioned the construction of the main building that still stands today. Around the year 1720 the house was radically renovated. After 1720 it was renovated and embellished by the new owner. Later a new garden was laid out with a larger parterre. In 1767, David van Lennep acquired the house and expanded it further. The estate remained in the hands of the Van Lennep family until 1953. In 1954 ‘Huis te Manpad’ was bought by Jan Visser, chief of protocol Foreign Affairs and ambassador in Stockholm. In 1978 the house was transferred to the ‘House in Manpad’ Foundation. After Visser’s death in 1984, his widow N. Visser-van Wijk lived there until her death in 2005. After a renovation, the house has been privately occupied again since May 2006. A memorial needle recalls a battle invented by Jacob van Lennep that never took place.

Ipenrode

During the late Middle Ages, the grounds of the adjacent country estates of Hartekamp and Boekenrode, together with Ipenrode, belonged to the noble (Haarlem) Van Berkenrode family. The homestead, originally called Voorkoekoek, probably originated from a farm. Actually two, the Front Cuckoo and the Rear Cuckoo. From 1760 a park in the landscape style was laid out. In 1972, the country estate was bought by a project developer who wanted to build 76 service apartments in the park. That plan fell through and the outside fell into disrepair. The first management plan was written in 1988 and better times soon followed. After a thorough restoration, the house and park have been owned by P.H. Van den Bos

Groenendaal walking forest

The walking forest was bought by the municipality of Heemstede in 1913. There were several country estates. Groenendaal was opened up as a publicly accessible walking forest. It was a visionary decision at the time, which contributed significantly to the quality of Heemstede and its character as a green municipality.

At the Bosbeek route (blue) near Heemstede, we first walk through the Groenendaal hiking forest. It is a busy walking forest, but soon we come to a wide water: the Van Merlevaart and walk from there along the ring canal. Back we pass the Bosbeek and Meerzicht country estates, which unfortunately cannot be visited.

Directions:

We follow the blue arrows from the starting point at the large parking lot in the Groenendaals hiking forest. We walk along the former Doodweg to the Van Merlevaart. The road was named that way because it used to lead to the cemetery and to the church on Wilhelminaplein. We pass the ring canal, which runs around the Haarlemmermeerpolder. Back we pass the Bosbeek and Meerzicht estates and walk through the walking forest to the parking lot.

Bosbeek country estate

The Bosbeek estate used to be the main building of Groenendaal. It changed hands continuously from the 17th century. After the house was used and looted by the German occupiers in World War II, a psychiatric institution was established there between 1949 and 1951. From 1951 it is a care center and cannot be visited.

Meerzicht

The Meerzicht house is a remnant of the 17th-century Meer en Berg house, which was demolished in 1910. The old house was demolished in 1910, except for a part that remained as an independent house and was later renamed ‘Meerzicht’.

The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen is one of the largest dune areas in the Netherlands. Many walkers come. But now we come to the quiet southern part. We arrive in an area where the dunes also walk. The landscape is constantly changing due to the wind. As a result, there is a large, wide and impressive landscape.

Starting point: Entrance near the Vogelaardreef. Coming from Ruigenhoek, park just after the first left turn.

Directions:

At the gate on the Vogelaardreef we first walk through a small nature reserve, the Langeveld. We go straight ahead, cross the cycle path and go through the fence of the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. We first follow the blue posts, but at the first T-junction we turn left. Then turn right and right again. We are now walking through the Van Limburg Stirum Valley. At the end of the path we turn right and walk to the mountain of Starrenbroek. Here we have a nice view. We turn left and now walk through a wooded area. At the first exit we turn left and get back to the gate. We cross the bike path and go back to the parking lot.

The sand dunes

Due to the wind you will only be able to find fresh traces of deer and foxes. Due to the varied landscape, about 70 different birds breed here every year. Some of these are the Stonechat and White-throated Whine, reed birds such as the Bluethroat and Reed Warbler. Also in winter many birds stay or are on their way or hibernate and come from the far north. The Kramsvogel and Redwings occur in these southern dunes.

A walk along the circuit

The walk along the circuit is a varied route. Next to the famous circuit of Zandvoort we pass the boulevard, with the busy beach life. An elevated shell path provides a view of the village, the bungalow park and the sports fields. Then we go through the green and take the Visscherspad back to the station.

Directions:

From the station we follow the orange arrows to the boulevard. We turn right and walk along the sea. At the NH hotel we turn right and walk past the entrance of the circuit. We continue along a shell path and there we can enjoy the view. Then we go along the edge of the village to the Visscherspad and walk back to the station from there.

Circuit

The Zandvoort circuit has fast, rolling and challenging corners formed by the natural dunes. It has recently been adapted so that it is suitable for Formula 1 races. The length is only 4.3 kilometers and is therefore one of the shorter circuits of the Formula 1 calendar. In addition to Formula 1, other events are also held, such as cycling, walking and running events and of course the Historic Grand Prix.

Het Trambaanpad (The Tramway Path)

Through the old Zandvoort streets we go to the Trambaanpad. The tram used to run here from Zandvoort to Amsterdam and back. The track has now been turned into a walking/cycling path. We pass Nature Bridge Zandpoort. Via the Blinkertweg we arrive at the Visscherspad, where fishermen’s wives from Zandvoort used to walk barefoot to Haarlem to sell their fish.

There we turn left and soon arrive at the old Visscherspad. Here we turn left back to Zandvoort.

Natuurbrug Zandpoort (nature bridge)

Zandpoort Nature Bridge is an ecoduct and one of the three Nature Bridges in Zandvoort, which gives plants and animals, such as deer, weasel, slow worm, sand lizard, natterjack toad, dune rose and all kinds of butterfly species, a larger contiguous habitat and more opportunities to reproduce and grow. to spread. Zandpoort Nature Bridge opened at the end of 2013 and is accessible to cyclists, horse riders, wheelchair users and walkers.

Visscherspad (Fisherman’s path)

The fishermen’s wives from Zandvoort used to walk this way to Haarlem to sell their fish. It was a grueling journey, because they walked through loose sand. For centuries, the village lived from fishing and growing dune potatoes. At the time, the fishing fleet consisted of a dozen boats. Such a barge had an eight-person crew on average. At high tide the ships sailed and at high tide they returned, after which the fish were laid out on the beach in ‘sneessies’ (portions) and immediately auctioned. The buyers were mostly women who sold the fish in Haarlem and the surrounding area. Via the Visserspad, the Blinkert and Kraantje Lek they walked with a heavy basket on their back and often with a basket around their arm to the Haarlem fish market on the Grote Markt. Almost 80% of the working population at that time lived directly or indirectly from fishing.

The Old Streets of Zandvoort

To experience the atmosphere of the old fishing village, this walk takes you through the old streets of Zandvoort. We enter the center via the famous Kippentrap. In the old center there are nice old fishermen’s houses and even in high season you can stroll around here in peace. We go back on the boulevard. We can now contemplate the busy beach life.

Kippentrap

De Zonnebaadster

De Zonnebaadster (The Sun Bather) is a striking sculpture by sculptor Jan van Luyn. It dates from 1966 and is made of bronze. It is five meters high.

Buitenplaatsenpad

Walk through the country estates of Groot-Leyduin, Hartekamp and the Overplaats and Groenendaal. The path takes you past several places of interest. Huis te Manpad, residence of the Van Lennep family, is one of the most beautiful historic parks in this region. The seventeenth-century baroque style is combined with the nineteenth-century landscape style. De Hartekamp, with its French-style gardens. De Overplaats van De Hartekamp with sight axis to De Hartekamp. Here is the largest playground in Europe. There is also a romantic mini ravine with a Swiss bridge and waterfall. The hiking forest Groenendaal with playground and petting zoo. The Leiduin pumping station from which cast iron pipes used to run towards Amsterdam. Huize Leyduin, which was enlarged by various owners into an impressive estate.

Directions:

We follow the green stickers with gel arrow towards the railway barriers. We cross the bridge, go straight ahead. At the end of the road we turn right. We now pass the House at Manpad. We walk on and enter the Hartenkamp estate on the right. We walk around the pond and cross the road to De Overkant van de Hartenkamp. We pass two romantic ponds. When we come out of the forest we turn right and the first left. Then we come back to the Herenweg and turn right. After a while we enter the Groenendaal estate. We pass the petting zoo and walk towards the windmill. There we turn left and arrive at the Jewish monument. We now walk through the forest and arrive at the main entrance of the walking forest. We turn right here and at a certain point turn left through a narrow path past residential houses. We now cross the Leidse Vaart and turn left. We arrive here at the former pumping station. We continue our way and turn right. We cross an unguarded level crossing (careful!) and walk through the Leyduin estate with its stately country house. This brings us back to the parking lot.

Walking park Groenendaal is now ecologically managed. This management method ensures a greater variety of flora and fauna. Some clearings have been created in the forest. This way you get a variety of colder and warmer places. Fallen branches and fallen trees remain, creating nutrients for plants and animals. The forest is also grazed by Scottish Highlanders. If you keep your distance, the animals are not dangerous.
