Mountain Bike Trail

Mountain bike trail

Zandvoort has a challenging mountain bike trail. It is located in the dune area next to the race track. It is a fairly technical round. There are small, tough climbs with steep descents and sharp turns. The course has a special bend: the Laar-Wall, a 300-meter long ‘Wall-ride’, with a curve of 44 meters long and 4 meters high. It is the largest Wallride in the Netherlands. It gives the job an extra experience. There are some bridges. Only in the summer can the sand be a bit looser, which makes driving more difficult.

The length of the trail is 9.8 kilometers. An electric bicycle pump is available. The track is maintained by the Dunebikers. They try to keep the trail passable. The route is marked with poles with the international MTB sign in green/pink (triangle with 2 circles below). The green signs indicate the main route and the pink signs are cut-off points to make it less difficult for novice mountain bikers.

You can start the route by taking the main entrance of the circuit Burgemeester van Alphenstraat 108 2041KP in Zandvoort. Then go behind the grandstand towards the Tarzanbocht. Here you will find the gate, where the route begins. You can also go to the car park next to the BMW Driving Experience. The start of the course is at the beginning of the noise barrier.

It is important to know that the Zandvoort mountain bike route is not a public area and is surrounded by nature reserves. The course is located on municipal land, which is partly leased by Circuit Park Zandvoort. There is also cycling over a few meters of protected nature reserve, which is currently tolerated (no maintenance is allowed here either). Maintenance and developments on the route can be followed on Facebook. Driving off the track is never allowed, not even on track terrain. Outside the paths will be inspected immediately.

Because part of the ATB course is on the territory of the Circuit Park, it is not possible to use the course during events. The ATB trail is also used by hikers and visitors to the Circuit Park. Our starting point is that everyone who walks or cycles on the course treats each other with respect. Hikers beware cyclists and cyclists beware walkers.

Nature reserve

The mountain bike route is located in the dune area near the race track. This dune area is characterized by a varied flora and fauna. It is a nature reserve where plants, animals and people feel welcome.

That is why it is important to know that the Zandvoort mountain bike route is not a public area and is surrounded by nature reserves. The course is located on municipal land, which is partly leased by Circuit Park Zandvoort. There is also cycling over a few meters of protected nature reserve, which is currently tolerated (no maintenance is allowed here either). Driving off the track is never allowed, not even on track terrain. Outside the paths will be inspected immediately.

Zandvoort is known for the Formula 1 race circuit, the Historic Grand Prix and numerous other events. You can enjoy walking and cycling.

Through the Bollenstreek (along the Keukenhof)

To the flower bulbs and the Keukenhof

We advise you to make this trip in the spring when the bulbs are in bloom. This is just about between Easter to Pentecost but also depends on the weather. You will be pleasantly surprised by the beautiful colors and wonderful smells. We drive through the fields and pass ‘De Keukenhof’.

Bulb cultivation originated in the surroundings of Haarlem in the sixteenth century. Over time the cultivation spread over the spirit grounds. In this way, the current Bollenstreek was created between Haarlem and Leiden in the second half of the 19th century. Nowadays you can also find bulb fields in the north of the province of Noord-Holland and elsewhere in the country, but most bulbs are still found in these regions.

Directions:

We start at the Raadhuisplein in the center of Zandvoort at the bicycle hub (79). We go to junction (77) and to junction (83). There we turn right and crossed the Zandvoortselaan. We continue straight ahead on a road that is forbidden for cars and at the end of the road we turn right and immediately left. Now we are back on the route to the junction (72). Then we go to the junctions (76) – (16) – (11) – (48) – (40). Now we are at the Keukenhof. We continue to (28) – (13) – (12) – (17) – (16) – (15) and direction (76). We do not turn right into the forest, but continue straight on the bike path along the Vogelenzangseweg. At the end of this road you go right again and then immediately left onto the bike path. We cross the Zandvoortselaan and continue via the old tram track to Zandvoort. Number (77) and (79).

The Keukenhof

The Keukenhof in Lisse is the largest flower garden in the world with more than seven million flower bulbs that are planted every season. It is one of the most beautiful attractions in the Netherlands, where many foreign tourists come to visit, especially in the month of April. Keukenhof accounts for more than a million visitors annually. On the colorful flower fields around the Keukenhof you can see beautiful blooming spring flowers such as crocuses, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and lilies. The 15 kilometer walking paths of the Keukenhof are constructed in such a way that you have a spectacular view of the wonderfully fragrant flower gardens and flowerbeds. During your walk you will see unique, weekly changing flower shows, beautiful ponds and various pavilions with various restaurants and terraces. Children can also have fun in the Keukenhof in the Nijntje playground or with a fun treasure hunt through the flower park. There is also a petting zoo and a nice maze where you get a nice view over the adjacent flower fields as a reward.

In addition to the huge flower garden, Keukenhof also houses the largest sculpture park in the Netherlands. You can admire many images made by national and international artists.

Cycle route to the Polderbaan

To the Polderbaan

Aircraft spotters among us pay attention: We cycle right past the start or runways of Schiphol. But on the way for the non-spotters there is also a lot to experience. We can cross twice with a ferry and we cycle through the Haarlemmermeerse Bos. The Haarlemmermeerse forest is a park-like area around a recreational lake. It is the recreation area for the Haarlemmermeer and surroundings and there is plenty to do. There are beaches with play equipment for the youth. You can walk, trim, cycle, swim and surf. In 2002 the Forest got a boost because the Floriade flower exhibition took place here.

At the Town Hall Square at junction 79 we cycle to 77 – 83 – 82 – 81 – 80 – 74. Now direction 53, but instead of turning right at the end, we can cross the ring canal with the pound. On the other side of the ring canal, we turn left and arrive again on the route to 53 and 54. We now cycle through the Haarlemmermeerse Bos. We continue to 55 and at 51 we cycle along the polder track. Continue to 50 – 89 – 84 – 35 – 82 – 83 – 77 – and back to the center of Zandvoort 79.

The polder track

The Haarlemmermeerse Bos is very suitable for walking. There are a number of beautiful paths to discover, for example the tree path. The tree path is three kilometers long and runs along (un) ordinary trees in Haarlemmermeer. The path, which is partly unpaved, runs along many common tree and shrub species in the Haarlemmermeerse forest. The route leads you through a total of 67 different trees and shrubs and starts behind the Historical Museum Haarlemmermeer.

To Noordwijk en Katwijk

To Noordwijk and Katwijk

We go along the bike path through the dunes to Noordwijk and Katwijk. First we drive along the Amsterdam Waterleidingduinen. At Langevelderslag we go through the Hollands Duin, which stretches from here to Wassenaar. The dunes are made by nature and man together. Wind and water formed beach and dunes, the people put on potato beds, won water from the dune and planted forests. At Katwijk we pass the Coepelduin, a special dune that falls under the nature conservation law. All landscape types can be found in this beautiful nature area, the gray dunes with many different plants, the wet dune valleys and the dune dunes. The area used to be used, among other things, to dry nets, to graze cattle and to grow potatoes there. Coepelduin is free to walk from 15 August to 15 March. Back we go inside and pass recreational lake Oosterduinse Meer, a former sand extraction pit and is part of the Rhineland basement system. The quality of the bathing water is not always good. It is better to use a beach exit and to dive into the North Sea. We come back to Langevelderslag and then head towards Zandvoort.

Difficulty: Due to the length a medium-heavy trip. We can shorten the trip a bit by not going to Katwijk.

We start at the Raadhuisplein in the center of Zandvoort at bicycle hub 79. We go in the direction of 31. Then we continue our way to junction 31 – 36 – 43 – 32 – 22. Lovers can now cycle to Katwijk junction 63 and back to 22. We continue our way and go to junction 23 – 24 – 33 – 69 – 42 – 80 – 47 – 35 – 6 – 31 and back to Zandvoort junction 79.

On the way one can encounter the Curlew in the dunes. It is a brownish spotted bird, recognizable by its long downwardly bent beak. He makes a whistling, somewhat melancholy sound. Here also grows the dune rose, the sea buckthorn, the wild privet and the poplar. The poplar is a tree with white leaves. The leaves are not really white, but light green from the top and silvery white felt-like from below. The felt layer ensures that the scarce moisture does not evaporate from the leaves.

At Katwijk a unique piece of the Netherlands

When we cycle to Katwijk, we drive through the Coepelduin. This piece of dune falls under the nature conservation law, because it is invaluable. You will find gray dunes with special plants, wet dunes and drifting dunes. Because of this change you will also find very rare flora and fauna.

Important breeding spot

The Coepelduin is also an important breeding ground. Birds can forage here, breed, rest and pass through. Dogs are also not allowed to enter these dunes. People are allowed to explore the dunes outside the breeding season.

Dunes in the raw state

What makes the dunes unique here is that they are here in the raw state, in contrast to the dunes around Zandvoort. No cattle walked around here, nor were potatoes grown or fish nets dried, which was customary for Dutch seaside villages.

Cycling through Spaarnwoude

Spaarnwoude, whose construction started in 1969, is like a green heart between Amsterdam, Haarlem and IJmuiden. It is a recreational area with many water sports facilities. We cycle on quiet cycle paths through forests and water parties interspersed with agricultural areas. We pass the small village of Spaarnwoude with its church on a mound. Often there is an exhibition in the church.

We start at junction 79 by the Raadhuisplein in the center of Zandvoort. We go to 77 – 37 – 36 – 21 – 1 – 22 – 23 – 24 – 31 – 32 – 33 – 28 – 26 – 29 – 30 – 12 – 13 – 14 – 17 – 11 – 98 – 93 – 94 – 38 – 39 – 34 – 20 – 1 – 21 – 36 – 83 – 77 – 79.

We first cycle past Elswout estate, where you can also walk (Elswout walk Red & walk blue). Then we cycle through Haarlem to the Haarlemmerliede, the birthplace of Cornelie Huygens (writer, social democrat and feminist) and Barend Biesheuvel (former prime minister of the Netherlands).

We cycle through a reclaimed area to the Houtrakpolder. Here you will find the Geuzenbos and the Golfclub. Then we cycle to the North Sea Canal, where we cycle over the bridge and finally enter Spaarnwoude.

Many meadow birds are found in the heart of Spaarnwoude. Thanks to the increased water levels, low fertilization and postponement of the mowing data, there are good opportunities build their nest and hatch their eggs.

After Spaarnwoude we cycle towards Velserbroek and Bloemendaal and slowly return to Zandvoort.

The Stomme Toren (Stupid Tower) of Spaarnwoude

While cycling from the Fietsroute Rondje van Haarlem we passed the striking landmark of Spaarnwoude. This tower dates from the 13th century. The Mayor of Amsterdam during the WWII is buried here and in the wall are two stones of the Sparrewouder giant (one of the largest inhabitants of Spaarnwoude).

Around Haarlem

Cycle route through the Haarlem neighborhood communities

The route takes you along the most beautiful spots around Haarlem. The route is mostly about cycle paths, but there are also forest paths and sand paths. You come through different landscapes, parks and forests. You cycle a section along the ringvaart, past ponds and the lake Mooie Nel at Spaarndam. Spaarndam is a picturesque village just like Spaarnwoude with its church with a blunt tower. (Often there are exhibits that are free to visit)

Difficulty: Because of its length it is a medium-heavy bike ride

Unfortunately, the green signs with yellow arrows are no longer everywhere. We therefore recommend that you follow the numbers of the cycle route network: We start at route junction 79 on the Raadhuisplein in Zandvoort. We go to the following nodes: 77-83-82-72-76-67-87-56-52-53-88-50-87-33-32-31-10-91-15-16-35-38 -39-34-07-99-66-18-79.

Door zijn lengte is het aanbevolen de route in tweeën te knippen. Via het routeknooppunten netwerk kunt u eenvoudig naar en van Zandvoort terugkeren.

Bij Heemstede komt u een ooievaarsnest tegen en bij de Liede fiets u door een lepelaarskolonie.

Around Haarlem

The cycling route ‘Rondje Haarlem’ was an initiative of the Haarlems Dagblad and the Noord-Hollands Landschap. The route does every beautiful spot of the surroundings of Haarlem in about 50 kilometers (from Zandvoort 9 kilometers extra bikes). The variety between tarmac, forest and sand paths makes this triptych very varied.

In the breeding season a cycle path has been closed, to give the birds rest. You can then take an alternative sand path.

From Zandvoort to the pier of IJmuiden

To the pier of IJmuiden

Cycle route through the National Park Zuid Kennemerland to the pier and back.
IJmuiden has an old pier, intended to protect the port entrance against silting up, and to offer ships a safe passage to the locks. There is a long road of 3 kilometers to a small lighthouse that many walkers and cyclists use. On the pier we have a great view of the sea, the beach and we can see Zandvoort in the distance. There is much fishing for flounder, dab, mackerel, gar, fint, generous, whiting, sea bass, sole and sometimes even eel. With more than wind force 5, the Zuidpier will be closed.

Difficulty: Easy but slightly longer trip.

We follow the numbers of the cycle route network starting on the Raadhuisplein at number 79. We go towards 18 – 66 – 6 – 92. Then we go towards 96, but at the end of the Zeewindpad, we turn left at the roundabout over the Kennemer Boulevard along the marina. At the end of the marina we keep left and go onto the pier. We go the same way back. Along the marina we turn right at the roundabout and follow number 92. Then 6 – 66 – 18 and finally 79 again.

The route can be shortened or extended using the cycle route network. At each node there is a cycle route map of the area.

On the pier

On the pier you can see special birds that you see almost nowhere else on the Dutch coast. There is a stretch of beach in front of the Zuidpier where bird watching begins. The stretch of beach that lies against the pier is particularly interesting. In the surf three-footed sandpipers, variegated sandpipers, ringed plover, silver plovers, red-tailed godwits and, if you’re lucky, a buck-tailed sandpiper, golden plover or small sandpiper foraging. Groups of seagulls rest on the beach. Crows fight over the remains of a crab. Sometimes there is a big or small mayor or a big hunter.
The best season to watch birds on the Zuidpier is the autumn and winter season. During the migration periods, the first winter guests arrive and birds pass by. The migrators are not only coastal birds! Numerous songbirds follow the coastline and can perch on the South Pier. You can then expect songbirds like golden rooster, fire golden rooster, spout, robin, large yellow wagtail, black scarlet and even the bullfinch. A visit to the Zuidpier is definitely recommended during the autumn migration. Often the songbirds are sitting there very tired and let themselves be seen from reasonable distance. And sometimes a little owl flies over, a little hunter or something completely different.

Cycling to Manor House Manpad

Cycling along the Huis te Manpad estate

Cycle route through the southern part of Kennemerland, past estates, country estates and other villas. We pass the Leiduin and Woestduin estates. The straight long avenues characterize the parks around these country estates, but were later mixed with the curved English landscape style. The Van Lennep family lived on the 18th-century estate Huis te Manpad for many years. The house can be viewed free of charge, but only by appointment. (www.huistemanpad.nl). There is a 240 meter snake wall, an orangerie and a menagerie. We cycle through the Groenendaal walking forest with its playground and petting zoo. Then we sailed through the Haarlemse Hout, an ancient city forest of Haarlem, to finally arrive at one of the most beautiful estates in the Netherlands: Landgoed Elswout. Its beautiful park with hills, bridges, gazebos and water features give it a Swiss appearance.

We start at the Raadhuisplein in the center of the village. Route junction 79. We follow the numbers 77 – 83 – 82 – 72 – 76 – 67 – 68 – 71 – 70 – 81 – 84 – 35 – 21 – 21 – 36 – 37 – From 37 we follow the signs to Zandvoort. We go straight on to Zandvoort (no number).

Along the way there are ANWB signs Manpadroute. These deviate slightly from the route and are no longer maintained by the ANWB. Sometimes they are missing. We recommend following the numbers of the route network.

The route can be shortened or extended using the cycle route network. At each junction there is a bicycle route map of the area.

Many exotic plants grow on Elswout, imported as ornamental herbs or medicinal herbs, including bright yellow spring sunflowers, stemless primroses and wild garlic.

About Manor house te Manpad
In 1634 to 1640, the Amsterdam merchant Cornelis Huerts started building the Huis te Manpad. The various owners after him have added their own extensions and improvements. The most famous here is the 240 meter snake wall, built by Wigbold Slicher Jr. After 1767, the house remained in the Van Lennep family for almost 200 years. The park can be visited regularly accompanied by a guide.

De Haarlemmerhout
The Haarlemmerhout is an ancient city forest with a lot of history. In 1426, the entire forest was even cut down to prevent Jacoba van Beieren and her troops from passing the city walls of Haarlem without kissing. In 1577 it fell for the second time. This time it was because the Spaniards besieged the city. In the 19th century, under the direction of landscape architect J.D. Zocher transformed into the English landscape style. The current curved cycle paths are a good feature of this.

Landgoed Elswout
The cycle route also passes Landgoed Elswout. Here you can follow two walks, which are also described on this site.

Brouwersvaart
Barges with pure dune water sailed over this canalized dune stream to the breweries in Haarlem. Haarlem breweries took the water from here in the 17th century, because the Spaarne was too polluted.

Cycling along the Beeckesteyn country estate

Cycle route along beautiful country estates and villa villages, but also through woods and dunes.

In the 17th century, the area you pass by was chosen as a residential area for wealthy Amsterdam patricians, who founded large estates with beautiful landscape parks. We pass the ruins of Brederode, a castle that used to keep the Frisians in check. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times, but a ruin since the 15th century. The Beeckesteyn estate was designed in the 18th century. After a thorough restoration, it is now a museum. The park at the house is a combination of tight 18th-century gardens and a stylish park in landscape style.

We follow the numbers of the cycle route network starting at the Raadhuisplein at number 79. We continue then go to 77 – 37-36 – 21 – 19 – 99 – 7 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 39 – 34 – 20 – 01 – 21 – 21 – 36 – 37. At this last number we go straight on the Visscherspad towards Zandvoort (numberless path).

On the way there are ANWB signs Beeckesteynroute. These differ slightly from the route and are no longer maintained. Sometimes they are missing. We advise you to follow the numbers of the route network.

The route can be shortened or expanded using the cycle route network. There is a cycle route map of the area at each junction.

Deer and roe deer are found in the area. Natuurmonumenten has transformed many pine forests into a more natural forest. The dune grasslands have been developed with plant species that thrive in nutrient-poor conditions. Cows and Shetland ponies graze to prevent the area from becoming rough.

Landgoed Beeckestijn

In the 18th century, the wealthy Amsterdammers left the stinking city and spent the summers in Kennemerland. Behind the dunes in Kennemerland there are more than sixty monumental country houses. The transition from the French gardens to the English landscape style can be clearly seen on the Beekcestijn estate.

Four families

The dune area between Zandvoort and IJmuiden was owned by only four families. In the 20th century their possessions (Kennemerduinen, Duin and Kruidberg, Midden Herenduin and the Herenduinen) were transferred to nature conservation organizations.

Velsen

At Velsen, the landscape of country houses and villa villages was broken in half by the construction of the North Sea Canal in 1876. Beeckesteyn is the remainder of the past and IJmuiden emerged as a new industrial city thanks to the canal.

Round around the Amsterdam Waterleidingduinen

We cycle along the sea wall along this route. You can take a refreshing dip at various beach exits. At Langenvelderslag we go into the interior. We pass country estates and villa villages. We drive past bulb fields, which bloom beautifully in the spring. Water supply for Amsterdam and the surrounding area is provided in the Amsterdam Waterleidingduinen. You can not see this from the bike, but you can enter the dunes on foot in various places.

In spring you also cycle along beautiful bulb fields!

We start at the Raadhuisplein in the center of Zandvoort at bicycle junction 79. We now go to junction 31 – 6 – 44 – 15 – 76 – 72 – 82 – 83 – 77 and back to the center 79.

At Vogelenzang the landscape becomes more open. There are many ditches that were specially dug for the removal of sand. . The sand was needed for the brick factory between Hillegom and Lisse. Because of the excavations, the groundwater was higher and a calcareous layer of sand was released. This provided an ideal breeding ground for bulb growing.
